연방거래위원회(FTC)는 의회에 제출한 ‘고령 소비자 보호 2025-2026’ 보고서에서 60세 이상 노년층의 사기 피해 신고액이 2020년 약 6억 달러에서 2025년 약 30억 달러로 5배 급증했다고 밝혔다. 노인을 대상으로 한 투자 사기 피해액은 2025년에 42% 증가해 10억 달러를 넘어섰으며, 사기범이 소셜미디어를 통해 자주 접근했다고 나타났다. 80세 이상 고령층의 건당 중간 피해액은 2,000달러였다.
